RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SEMINAR -- JULY 20, 2013
PRUDENT SUPPLY
There are several unlicensed, or easily licensed, radio services available for use by the
public. The radios have come down in price and for local communications they are
viable. Here’s a short survey.
General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)
An FCC license is required to operate a General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radio.
Licenses are issued for a five-year term and can be renewed. You can apply for a
GMRS license if you are 18 years or older and not a representative of a foreign
government. If you receive a license, any family member, regardless of age, can operate
GMRS radios within the licensed system.
These radio frequencies (in megahertz) are used in the GMRS:
462.5500, 462.5625
, 462.5750, 462.5875, 462.6000, 462.6125, 462.6250,
462.6375, 462.6500, 462.6625, 462.6750, 462.6875, 462.7000, 462.7125,
462.7250, 467.5500, 467.5750, 467.6000, 467.6250, 467.6500, 467.6750,
467.7000, 467.7250
The underlined frequencies are shared with the Family Radio Service.
You can expect a communications range of five to twenty-five miles. GMRS devices
generally transmit at 1 to 5 watts and may have detachable antennas. This makes it
possible to connect an external antenna to improve reception and transmission.
There is an FCC assigned call sign that must be transmitted by voice when using GMRS
radios, for identification purposes.
Family Radio Service (FRS)
An individual license is not required to operate an FRS radio. You can operate an FRS
radio regardless of your age and for personal or business use so long as you are not a
representative of a foreign government. FRS radios have a maximum power of ½ watt
effective radiated power and integral (non-detachable) antennas. The usual range of
communications between FRS devices is less than one mile. This may work fine around
a small acreage.
These radio frequencies (in megahertz) are used in the FRS:
462.5625
, 462.5875, 462.6125, 462.6375, 462.6625, 462.6875, 462.7125,
467.5625, 467.5875, 467.6125, 467.6375, 467.6625, 467.6875, 467.7125
The underlined frequencies are shared with the General Mobile Radio Service.
